Still alive May 25, 2009

Been a little quiet lately..
I’ve been working on a commercial that’s going to be on national tv here in Belgium.
So that kinda took alot of my time :)
Also, my urban paper book arrived and I’ve been building those papermodels.
They are totally great, and give me a better vision of how papercraft is created.
( So I really hope I can make my own papermodel soon!)

More news soon ( when the commercial is finished and there’s more time )

E440 Papercraft Project April 9, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — flake @ 9:00 am

E440 is a project by a Dutch Designer. ( http://alle440.blog.com/ )
In 1999 KLM Cargo cut 440 living squirrels into bits using a shredder because the required bills of health were missing…
E is derived from “Eekhoorn” [squirrel in Dutch], 440 is the number of slaughtered squirrels.
The aim of this project is to come up with 440 different interpretations of e440 and to release them on the internet,
including the customizable blank template. Customized versions will be available for free downloading from this blog.

The E440-models travel all over the world and gets photographed in the builders surroundings.
( You can find the travel pictures here : http://e440aroundtheworld.blog.com/ )
If you are a papertoy builder, look around the website build an E440 and send your picture to alle440@hotmail.com
If you are a designer, you can ask for the template on the E440 website, and help him reach 440 designs.

Since a few days, I’ve been working on my own interpretation of the E440 model.
I will post it here when I finish it.

Here are some examples of the E440 models.

Howl’s moving castle papercraft April 8, 2009

Filed under: Paper Toys, Papercraft, Papercraft models — flake @ 9:36 am

This must be one of the best free papercraft models in my collection and it took me a week to complete it. (Spening a few hours every night)  The model is highly detailed and has moving parts, particularly the wings, this is considered a paper craft model and at the same time a paper automata because it’s got the mechanisms for movement. If you haven’t seen the movie “Howl’s moving castle” , I highly recommend you see it!

The Howl’s Moving Castle papercraft is hosted by Epson Japan and is available for both Windows and Mac users. The files come in two parts, a guide and the pattern itself and is really huge, the pattern is 54MB and the guide is 15MB for Windows users, it’s even bigger for the MacOS crowd.
If your having a hard time understanding the instruction guide(Japanese), you can download an English translation for it below, courtesy of rose-rote.

It’s a very fun model to make!

Urban Paper Book April 7, 2009

The amazing papertoy artist, Matt Hawkins , made a book that features a rather impressive collection of papertoys by as many impressive papertoy artists. The working title is Urban Paper, and each toy is ready to punch out and build.

This fun project book includes step-by-step instructions, diagrams, and a section about how to design your own paper toys from scratch. Plus, a bonus CD-ROM features patterns for all 25 toys and even more templates to print out. Complete with interviews from the toy designers, this fun guide gives you everything you need to build and even design your own cutting edge urban paper toys.

I ordered this book yesterday, can’t wait to have it!
Here’s Matt with a preview of the papertoys that are in Urban Paper.

Hello world! April 7, 2009

Filed under: Papercraft by me — flake @ 12:53 pm

Welcome to PaperFlake.

I’m a 20 year old graphic designer from Belgium that discovered the fun of papercraft a while ago.
I’m planning to make my own papercraft soon , that’s why I start this blog.
So this is an attempt at making a first post

Yesterday I adjusted a template from

http://macula.tv/papercraft

Christopher Bonnette (macula.tv) has a bunch of cool papermodels available on his website.
While looking for something to make, I downloaded his
Blank Imp Template and had some fun in Illustrator.

Lizard King

Lizard King

This is what came out, my Lizard King. It has spikes on the back of his head too.
Comments are always welcome, I’m planning to make more of these soon.
I will probably make some attempts at making my own papercraft aswell.
